Custom Fit

On a recent visit to the local golf shop, I ordered new grips for my 40-year-old clubs, Wilson Pro Staff irons.  The golf tech, also an elderly man, raised his eyebrows when I placed my clubs on his counter.  He said “they don’t make clubs like these anymore; with these clubs you have to hit them near perfect to make a good shot”.  I get frequent compliments on my swing and I attribute that to my clubs.  Unlike the forgiving golf clubs of today, if my swing is a tiny bit off, the result is not pretty.  My swing has to be true to produce a good shot. I honed my golf swing based on the feedback from my clubs.

He pointed to the row of a half a dozen artificial tee boxes where customers were hitting golf balls into a screen.  Those customers were being fitted for new clubs whereby a computer program would analyze their stance and swing style.  Based on the information collected, “custom clubs” were developed to fit their swing styles for optimum results.  I asked “would it not be better to teach your customers how to properly swing the club?”.  He laughed and said “we are in the business of selling golf clubs”.

Driving home it struck me, that’s how this world works as opposed to God’s world.  In this world, in lieu of convicting you of your sin, the world becomes a custom fit to your behavior and makes your sin acceptable.  You don’t need to adjust your path, if you are happy in your behavior then it is suitable.  The old adage applies… “if it feels good, do it.” One could add – “and don’t feel ashamed about it either”.  Don’t worry about being convicted of your deviant behavior, the world will make it acceptable.

In fact, those who question unacceptable behavior are told they need to practice tolerance.  “If it is not hurting you, what do you care?” or “stop being so judgemental! ”.

Have you ever heard the phrase “you have what you tolerate”?  Because that’s what we are faced with today, we are forced to endure a fallen world that we tolerated.

In my humble opinion the world is looking more and more like Sodom and Gomorrah. The citizens of these two ancient cities were sexual deviants practicing orgies, rape, pedophilia, prostitution, and homosexuality.  It was reckless abandonment of moral behavior.

Of course, this has existed for centuries but the difference today is that there is less and less attempts to hide it.  It is becoming more of an “acceptable behavior”.

Sexual perversion is becoming the norm.  Men with men, women with women, adults with children.  Alleged pedophile Jeffrey Epstein had a private island to supply under aged girls to please the perverted needs of celebrities and wealthy elites.  He flew his “friends” to the island on a plane named the Lolita Express.

Seriously, I don’t know what is more shocking… a gay pride parade of men happily exposing their manhood or the parents who voluntarily bring their children to the event?

The deviant is becoming the new normal
and there are no boundaries.

Hopefully, the current president has put an end to allowing men to compete in women’s sports by claiming to be men. But it should not take an executive order to do so. How did this world leave the rails of common sense and dignity? Men and women desiring to change their sexual organs to transgender from their original gender to the other should be treated by a psychiatrist not a surgeon.

Parental rights are still under attack in some states.  Woe to the teachers who notify the parents whose children want to identify as the opposite sex.  Woe to the parent who challenges the public school board about what they are teaching their children with their tax dollars!

It’s not just sexual perversion, today we have hordes of men and women (flash mobs) openly stealing from department stores without accountability.  A thief walks out of a box store with a cartful of stolen tools and the box store fires any employee who tries to stop them.  And our government is complicit by not prosecuting thefts under $1,000 in value.  Steal what you want and keep it under $1,000 – you have what you tolerate!

The kindest explanation would be mental illness.
A more accurate one would be it’s is evil.

The goal of this world is to eliminate God.  The Bible states the ruler of this world is the prince of darkness.   His main goal is to separate us from our Creator.  And he uses 3 tools to accomplish that:

  • Desires of the eyes (idolatry, extraordinary wealth)
  • Desires of the flesh. (sexual immorality, excess food or drink indulgence)
  • Pride of life (arrogance, self-boasting, ostentation).

For all that is in the world
—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—
is not from the Father but is from the world.

1 John 2:16 (ESV)

In Jude 12 (ESV), Jude warns of the dangers of “hidden reefs”.  Many ships have been lost running aground upon undetected reefs.  The reefs of this world are the desires of our eyes, desires of our flesh, and our pride of life.

My 40-year-old golf clubs remind me of the Holy Spirit.  If my swing was just a little bit off, I knew within a split second.  If we drift from our walk with Jesus, the Holy Spirit convicts us immediately.  If I get distracted by the allure of this world, the Holy Spirit convicts me.

Keep in mind the difference between conviction and condemnation.  The Holy Spirit convicts us out of love to keep us walking in His light and to focus on God’s world which promises eternity in heaven.  This physical world condemns us by alluring us with temporal pleasures that lead us to destruction.

But therein lies the problem.  If we are not turned toward God and welcome His light, we are not open to the nudging’s of His Holy Spirit.  In other words, if we choose to turn towards this world, we will continue to live and stumble in the dark.

Believers walk in His light understanding we are sinners and thankful to be saved by God’s grace.

Non-believers walk in the dark denying their sinful condition and choosing the fellowship of this world that is temporal at best.

I am not sure what is more incredible.  God who created everything including us, who loves us so much that He gave us absolute free will; or those who willfully choose this world over God’s presence.  It’s hard to comprehend that humans choose to reject their loving creator.   But they are not alone, so does the devil.

  1. I enjoyed this article but who was the golfer? I think I know.

  2. I think you were too harsh on the golfer. Those guys are under a lot of stress. Do you know him personally?
You were very judgmental towards him.

    1. Mandy thank you for your reply. I edited your comment just a bit because you included someone’s personal info and that is not allowed.
To answer your question, no I do not know the golfer personally. I don’t know if he is a true believer. The Bible states that it is ok to judge but not from a self-righteous perspective. Although I do not know the young man’s heart, the Bible also teaches us you can judge a tree by its fruit. In addition, we also learn in Matthew 6:21 (ESV) “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” and in Matthew 16:18 (ESV) “But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person”. The words coming from the golfer’s mouth that day were from a very self-centered heart. Keep in mind he was ecstatic at the time of the interview because he came from 7 strokes back to tie the lead golfer. Yes, I was happy he didn’t win because of his comments but I also prayed that he would turn towards God and receive His light. The more of us enjoying His presence, the better! That’s the purpose of this blog and I hope you will continue to contribute. 🙏

  3. Norman Stands in His Light

I was raised in a good family that believed in God. But the religion we practiced concentrated too much on the condemnation. Sins were categorized as if some were better than others. All sin is offensive to God. Thankfully, He gave us Jesus whose work on the cross freed us from condemnation. In addition to Jesus, He gave us the Holy Spirit to convict us of our sin, not condemn us. I am thankful Jesus not only saved me from my sins, He saved me from a religion of false teachings.

  4. My husband is a wonderful man and many women would love to be in my shoes. He is a great provider, a very good dad, and he goes to church. But I wish he would spend as much time with our Lord as he does on the golf course.
